Shelter
Them is an organization that is based on Christian
foundations which teach us to help those in need.
This includes physical, psychological and spiritual
help. They need not only hope in a future but help
for the now.
In 1994 the culmination of the years of hatred
resulted in the genocide of Rwanda’s people. In 100
days more than 800 000 people were killed by knife,
machete and guns. This was not carried out by bombs
it was eye to eye. This left many with no family,
psychological issues and no hope. Read more...
Even though it’s been 13 years, many are still
homeless, hopeless and depressed. These have been
ravaged by genocide and AIDS. They are without hope
due to nothing they did.
In September 2005 the twins, Josephine and Jocelyne
who founded Shelter Them made a trip back home to
Rwanda after 8 years of living safe and in Canada.
It was meant to be a leisure trip for visiting
family and introducing their husbands to them, but
as things sometimes happen. Their lives were put
into perspective. Their brother Jules Higiro had
started a program in his church to feed and spend
time with the street youth of Kigali. Almost one
hundred or so youth come to have a meal all seated
in a large circle. Most likely the only meal that
week. After they got together in the church they had
a service. It was simple, let them get up and lead
the singing as well as choose the songs. Next is a
quick sermon that is meant to encourage them and
know that God was with them. After they would talk
with each other and the leaders would get to know
them and let them talk, show that they do care and
build confidence. This simple foundation is what we
still do and we look forward to building upon it.
